Wild Nature & Coastal History

Explore the northwest coast of São Miguel on a sea discovery experience, where the power of the Atlantic has shaped some of the island’s most impressive natural formations.

We recommend booking in advance, as the north coast of São Miguel is more exposed to the Atlantic and sea conditions may vary.Departing from the traditional fishing village of Rabo de Peixe, we sail along dramatic cliffs towards the Capelas area, passing unique volcanic landscapes and coastal formations shaped over thousands of years.

A highlight of the experience is the observation of the Elephant Trunk, an iconic natural rock arch, along with sea caves and rock structures formed by continuous marine erosion.

Along the route, we highlight the Capelas Hill, a volcanic tuff cone formed by a submarine eruption - a process similar to the formation of the Vila Franca do Campo islet, one of the Azores’ most iconic landmarks.

The landscape reveals lava flows, columnar jointing and erosion forms that create arches, islets and caves, showing the constant interaction between volcanism and the ocean.

Approaching the port of Capelas adds a cultural dimension to the experience, revealing the deep connection between the sea and local communities shaped by fishing, orange export and whaling traditions. On the return, we cross open sea with wide views of the island, in a moment of pure Atlantic contemplation.

This experience prioritizes close contact with rock formations, seabird observation and geological interpretation, at a calm and immersive pace.

Operated in small groups, it ensures comfort, closeness and a more personalized experience. On board, we serve local tea, water and regional biscuits, creating an authentic and welcoming atmosphere.

Each departure is adjusted to sea conditions to ensure safety and the best possible experience.

An experience that connects the sea, the land and the living history of São Miguel’s northwest coast.
